Winter Blues

So we've survived so called Blue Monday. That means we're over the worst of it, right? It can only get better?

It's been a funny old winter really. It's never been that cold, we've barely had a frost and it's rained. A lot. Having moved back home to the worlds coldest house in November I, for one, am pretty pleased about the temperature thing but the rain is just too much. We have been very lucky comparatively, our house is dry, our horses are safe and I can't even begin to imagine what some people have had to cope with! But we are trawling through mud, water and lakes we never knew we had and it's just so damn depressing.

Our fields are all clay which makes turning out near impossible. The damage they would do to the fields and themselves just isn't worth it.So they're either in loose yards or having to exercise in our school. It's fine, they cope. But it's just not the same as them being out in the field.

They're getting grumpy now. You can see them gazing longingly at their summer fields wondering what they did wrong. Trust me girls, you would soon change your mind if we left you there!

But, saying all that, we've managed to get started. As soon as the new year rang in, we were on it! There's no messing around this year which means we are having to brave the depressing damp and power on. Not since my cradle stakes days have we been crazy enough to contemplate showing this early on in the year!

Time to wrap up warm

But I'm starting to sense there's a light at the end of the tunnel; it's getting ever so lighter on a morning, it's raining a little less and Facebook is starting to have a little more horsey activity. A virtual buzz is starting, a sense of excitement and anticipation as everyone starts to turn their attention to the season ahead.

So hurry up summer, or even spring. I'm ready for you now. I'd like to be able to see my horse in the daylight and let them go in the field to enjoy having the sunshine on their backs and maybe not have to wear 276 layers every time I step outside.
