This Girl Can Ride

On a day when her Majesty the Queen, a true icon of equestrianism, became our longest reining monarch it seemed appropriate to talk about the This Girl Can Ride campaign that is building momentum ahead of this Sunday’s Give Horses a Go Day.
I am a huge fan of the This Girl Campaign and it’s hard-hitting, no nonsense adverts are brilliant. There’s no shying away, sugar coating or glamourizing women in sport. 'I kick balls, deal with it' is definitely my favourite headline.

Off the back of This Girl Can, the British Equestrian Federation have launched This Girl Can Ride, a campaign which celebrates the benefits of riding and encourages new participants to get involved and give horses a go.

As I’ve mentioned before, horses have always been a very big part of my life but those people who have not yet had the opportunity, here are my 6 reasons as to why I think EVERYONE should give horse riding a go…

1. Horse riding can be enjoyed whatever your age. Of course I’m not advocating putting your two year old on board (although it didn’t do me any harm) nor am I suggesting it’s a great idea if you’re 89 (not that this stops the Queen) but young and old can enjoy horses just as much as each other. It’s a great way of making friends outside of your immediate age group and something that the whole family can get involved with.

2. It’s something different. Everyone plays football or goes swimming, not everyone can ride a horse. It’s a unique skill that requires strength, coordination, intelligence & perseverance. You don’t have to be good at other sports to be able to ride a horse. Take it from somebody that knows!

3. There will always be a new challenge. To begin with it’s all about learning to balance yourself, learning to steer, learning to trot. But once the basics are mastered you will never stop learning or finding a new challenge. Horse riding will offer you a great sense of achievement.

4. I promise you, there is no greater feeling than galloping across a field on horseback with the wild blowing in your face. It’s good for the heart & soul.

5. It’s great exercise. Half an hour riding beats half an hour slogging it out in the gym any day. It’s a whole body workout and will guarantee you a fantastic bum!

6. The partnership and level of trust you can build with a horse is like no other. Learning to trust an animal which weighs half a tonne and knowing that, they too, trust you is incredibly special. You learn what makes them tick, how to get the best out of them & how to work together. The kind of bond you can have with a horse is very hard to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it but, trust me, it is worth working for.

If you’re already a horse rider I’d love to hear why you would recommend it to others. If you’re thinking of giving it a go, DO IT! Then come back and tell me all about it.

The Give Horse A Go day is being held this Sunday, the 13th, and information about the day can be found here http://bit.ly/1EOSoIn
